The blockchain/DLT offers a vast range of applications that can be extended to various areas of banks’ core processes (payments, finance, lending, know your customer, etc.) and, as a subject, it is one of the priorities for research in the field of banking.
The operating approach towards this technology is gradually developing from individual experimentation to system projects through participating in international consortia and through sector-based initiatives.
With respect to the areas of application where blockchain and DLT projects have been launched within the field of banking in Italy, the area where most investments have been made is that of inter/intra-bank transfers, driven in particular by the Spunta Banca DLT project (coordinated by ABI Lab), the first application of DLT technology involving the entire banking sector.
