In 2019, IBM earmarked almost 6 billion dollars for research and development activities, carried out in 12 centers world-wide, with over 8,500 engineers, scientists and designers from 54 countries.

Since 1993, the company has continuously led the ranking of patents filed in the United States: of the 9,260 patents granted to IBM in 2019, more than 1,800 were related to AI, 2,500 to cloud and 1,400 to cybersecurity—more than any other company in either area.
